When Your Hope Feels Heavy…
Sometimes feeling “off” isn’t just emotional — it can be physical, too. When our bodies are running low on the nutrients they need, it can impact our mood, energy, and even how we handle stress. Taking time to care for your body is one of the ways we can partner with God in the healing process.
If you’ve been feeling drained or down, it might help to explore simple steps like adding quality supplements or even taking an at-home health test to see what your body might be missing.

Fasting
Fasting, the Body, and Cancer Research
Fasting has long been practiced as a spiritual discipline, but modern research has also begun exploring how periods without food affect the body at a cellular level. Scientists studying metabolism have found that fasting can shift the body from a constant state of growth and storage into one of repair and renewal.
During fasting, insulin levels drop and the body begins using stored energy, primarily from fat. As this shift occurs, the liver produces molecules called ketones, which many cells—including brain cells—can use as fuel. Some researchers believe this metabolic transition may influence inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular signaling pathways that play roles in overall health.
Another process that may increase during fasting is autophagy, a natural cellular “cleanup” mechanism in which cells remove damaged components and recycle old proteins. This process helps maintain cellular integrity and has been an area of growing interest in longevity and disease research.
In the context of cancer, some early laboratory studies and small clinical trials have explored whether fasting or fasting-mimicking diets might influence how cancer cells respond to stress or treatment. Researchers such as Dr. Jason Fung and others studying metabolic health have highlighted how lowering insulin and stabilizing blood sugar may create an environment less supportive of certain metabolic diseases.
Some experimental studies suggest fasting may make healthy cells more resilient to stress while leaving certain cancer cells more vulnerable. However, it is important to understand that current research is still developing, and fasting is not considered a cure or standalone treatment for cancer. Much of the strongest evidence so far comes from laboratory and animal studies, and larger human trials are still ongoing.
Because cancer treatments can affect nutrition and body weight, fasting should always be approached carefully and in consultation with a medical professional.
For many believers, however, fasting is not only about metabolism or cellular pathways. It is ultimately about drawing closer to God, quieting the noise of daily life, and remembering that our deepest strength does not come from food alone.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
— Matthew 4:4
In this way, fasting becomes both a physical reset and a spiritual realignment, reminding us that healing involves body, mind, and spirit.

A Spiritual Perspective
While the body undergoes these physical changes, fasting has always carried a deeper purpose. For many believers, fasting is less about what we remove from our plate and more about what we make room for in our hearts.
It is a time to pray, reflect, and remember that our strength ultimately comes from God.
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke?”
— Isaiah 58:6
In this way, fasting can serve as both a biological reset and a spiritual renewal.
